Gross to net salary in Germany, explained

German payroll deducts wage tax and four social insurances from your gross (Brutto) pay to arrive at your net (Netto) salary. How much you keep depends on your tax class, federal state, health-insurance type, and whether you pay church tax. This free Brutto Netto Rechner estimates all of it from official rules.

Frequently asked

What is Brutto and Netto in Germany?+

Brutto is your gross salary before deductions. Netto is what actually lands in your bank account after wage tax, solidarity surcharge, church tax (if applicable), and social-insurance contributions.

Why is my German net salary lower than my gross salary?+

Germany deducts wage tax (Lohnsteuer) plus four social insurances — pension, unemployment, health, and long-term care — directly from gross pay. Together these typically reduce gross by roughly 35–45% depending on income, tax class, and insurance.

Which tax class should I choose?+

Most single employees are in class I. Single parents may qualify for class II. Married couples use III/V or IV/IV depending on income split. Your tax class strongly affects monthly net but not your final yearly tax, which is settled in your annual return.

Does the Bundesland affect my net salary?+

Slightly. Church tax is 8% in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% elsewhere, and Saxony splits the care-insurance contribution differently. The wage tax itself is federal and identical across states.

What is church tax in Germany?+

Kirchensteuer is a tax (8% or 9% of your wage tax) collected from registered members of certain churches. If you are not a member, you do not pay it — toggle it off in the calculator.

What is the solidarity surcharge?+

The Solidaritätszuschlag is 5.5% of wage tax, but only above a high threshold. Most employees on typical salaries pay €0 due to the Freigrenze.

How accurate is this calculator?+

It is an estimate based on official German tax and social-security rules for the selected year. It does not model bonuses, individual deductions, or every payroll edge case, and tax classes V/VI depend on your partner. Treat it as planning guidance, not a payroll result.

Is this tax advice?+

No. This tool is for educational and planning purposes only and is not tax, legal, payroll, or immigration advice. Verify final figures with a tax advisor or your employer’s payroll.

Does this help with visa decisions?+

It can help you understand take-home pay, but it does not determine visa eligibility. Salary thresholds for routes like the EU Blue Card use gross salary and change yearly — always confirm with official German authorities.
